Tips for Equine Emergencies

For all emergencies, please call the office number (207) 646 – 7200. If your emergency is outside business hours, the voicemail message will give you the emergency contact number for Dr. Karieanne MacDonald. Occasionally, she may be unavailable and in those cases, the number of the veterinarian who is covering for us will be provided. Even if you have contact numbers from previous emergencies, always call the clinic first. This is to assure that you receive prompt care; if we are not on call, we may not receive your message immediately. Also keep in mind that we may be tending to another emergency when you call. We recommend that you keep a first aid kit which should contain the following: bandage material and gauze, phenylbutazone (paste, powder or tabs), Banamine paste, artificial tears, poultice, antibacterial ointment, leg wraps, ice packs, mineral oil, Pepto Bismol or milk of magnesia and a dosing syringe. Also, we recommend that you double check all expiration dates on your meds.
